A .ai file is Adobe Illustrator artwork. Most contain a full PDF inside, so you can drop one here and get a vector PDF, or a PNG, JPG or WebP per artboard, with no Illustrator and no upload.

AI is Illustrator's working format. Since Illustrator CS, files are saved with "Create PDF Compatible File" on by default, which means the .ai is a PDF with Illustrator's editing data added. That is why many PDF viewers can open an .ai file simply by renaming it.
Older files (Illustrator 8 and earlier), and files saved with PDF compatibility off, contain PostScript instead. Those are drawn by the same engine used for EPS where possible.
| Extension | .ai |
|---|---|
| Type | Illustrator artwork (usually a PDF inside) |
| AI to PDF | PDF-compatible files are passed through unchanged, fully vector |
| Images | PNG, JPG, WebP, one per artboard; white background for PDF-based files |
| Cannot do | Edit layers or appearances; open files saved without PDF compatibility that need Illustrator's own definitions |
| Processed | In your browser; nothing uploaded |
Drop the .ai file here. For the usual PDF-compatible kind, choosing PDF returns the embedded PDF unchanged and fully vector, with fonts and colours exactly as saved. Choose PNG, JPG or WebP to render each artboard as an image at 72, 150 or 300 DPI.
If you get an error, the file was saved without PDF compatibility. Ask the designer to re-save with "Create PDF Compatible File" ticked, or to export a PDF.
Drop the .ai file here and choose PDF. A PDF-compatible .ai is already a PDF inside, so you get it back as a vector PDF without Illustrator.
Not directly. Convert it here to PDF, PNG or JPG and the result opens anywhere.
The PDF inside is rendered as a page of paper. For transparency, export a PNG from Illustrator or work from an EPS or SVG version.
Yes. Each artboard is a page. Choose the pages and the resolution, and each becomes its own image.
It was saved without PDF compatibility, so it needs Illustrator itself. Ask for a re-save with "Create PDF Compatible File" or a PDF export.
No. Output is a flattened PDF or image. Layers are only editable in Illustrator.
