How to do it

  1. Drop your .ai file below. Its artboards appear as pages.
  2. Pick the pages you want and a resolution, 150 DPI for screens and 300 for print.
  3. Press Convert. Each artboard becomes its own PNG.

How a .ai becomes an image

A modern .ai file contains a complete PDF, one page per artboard. This page renders those pages with the same PDF engine used for PDF to PNG, at the DPI you choose. Fonts that Illustrator embedded in the file are used, so text comes out as designed.

The background is white

Illustrator's PDF pages are rendered onto a white page, the way a PDF viewer shows them, so the PNG has a solid white background. If you need the artwork on a transparent background, export a PNG from Illustrator with transparency, or work from an EPS or SVG version of the artwork.

Older files

Files from Illustrator 8 and earlier are PostScript rather than PDF inside. They are drawn by this site's EPS engine when possible, and in that case the background stays transparent. Files that need Illustrator's internal definitions give a clear message rather than a broken image.

Questions

Is this free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no cap on how many files you convert.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server — you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Do I need Illustrator?

No. The file is opened and rendered in your browser.

Can I pick one artboard?

Yes. Each artboard is a page. Type the page numbers you want, such as 2 or 1,3-4, and only those are rendered.

Why is the background white, not transparent?

The PDF inside the .ai is rendered as pages of paper, so it is white. Export a transparent PNG from Illustrator if you need one.

What resolution should I use?

150 DPI for screens and documents, 300 DPI for print.
