Get a PDF from an Adobe Illustrator .ai file without owning Illustrator. The artwork stays vector, and the file never leaves your device.

Since Illustrator CS, .ai files have been saved with "Create PDF Compatible File" switched on by default. The file is then a full PDF with Illustrator's own editing data added. This page detects that and gives you the PDF part unchanged, renamed to .pdf. Nothing is redrawn, so nothing is lost: every vector, font and colour is exactly as Illustrator saved it.
Files from Illustrator 8 and earlier, and files saved with PDF compatibility switched off, contain PostScript instead. These are drawn by the same engine as the EPS converter and written to a vector PDF. If the file depends on Illustrator's internal drawing definitions or on fonts, it cannot be drawn outside Illustrator. You will get a clear message asking for a re-save with PDF compatibility switched on.
A PDF-compatible .ai file with several artboards becomes a PDF with one page per artboard. To get images of particular artboards instead, use AI to PNG and choose the pages.
Yes. No account, no watermark, no cap on how many files you convert.
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server — you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
No. Everything happens in your browser. No Adobe account, plugin or trial is needed.
Yes. For PDF-compatible .ai files, which is almost all of them, the embedded PDF is passed through untouched. Older PostScript-based files are drawn to a vector PDF.
It was saved without PDF compatibility, so it needs Illustrator's own definitions to draw. Ask the designer to re-save it with "Create PDF Compatible File" ticked, or to export a PDF.
You can open it in any PDF viewer or editor. Illustrator-specific editing features, such as layers and appearance settings, are only available in Illustrator itself.
