WebP typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at visually identical quality. On an image-heavy page that is the single cheapest performance win available — no code changes, no CDN, no cost. Google has used page speed as a ranking input for years, which is why almost every large site has already made this switch.
Both formats are lossy. Converting a JPG to WebP decodes it and compresses it again, so any damage already baked into the JPG stays, and a little more is added. At quality 85 that second pass is invisible. If you still have the camera original or the export from your editor, convert from that instead.
Serve WebP to browsers and keep the JPGs as your fallback and your archive. Most site builders and CDNs will pick the right one per visitor automatically. Deleting the originals is a one-way door for no benefit.
