BMP is the old Windows bitmap format. It stores raw pixels with little or no compression, so a photo-sized BMP can be tens of megabytes. Scanners, older instruments, screen-capture tools and legacy software still write it.
PNG holds the same pixels exactly in a fraction of the space; JPG makes it smaller still for photographs.

Drop the BMP, pick PNG if you want the pixels preserved or JPG for the smallest file, and convert. Most browsers open BMPs, but upload forms rarely accept them.
BMP stores pixels almost uncompressed, so size is simply width times height times colour depth.
PNG for screenshots, diagrams and anything you want unchanged; JPG for photos where size matters.
Not to PNG. JPG is lossy, but at the default quality the loss is rarely visible.
Most do, but many websites reject them as uploads, which is the usual reason to convert.
