PNG is lossless, exactly like BMP, but it actually compresses. Every pixel is preserved bit for bit while the file typically drops to a quarter or less of the BMP size. For screenshots and flat-colour graphics the reduction is often far greater. There is no quality trade-off to weigh here.
If your BMP contains text, UI elements, charts or line art, PNG is the correct target and JPG is not. JPG compression leaves visible halos around every hard edge. PNG keeps them perfectly sharp and still shrinks the file substantially.
For a photograph, JPG will produce a file many times smaller than PNG and the difference will not be visible. Use PNG for anything with hard edges, JPG for anything continuous-tone.
