AVIF supports an alpha channel, and plenty of AVIF files downloaded from websites use it. Converting to JPG destroys that by flattening onto a solid colour. PNG keeps it, which makes this the right conversion for any AVIF with a transparent background.

Expect a much larger file

AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats in existence and PNG is lossless. Converting between them can multiply the file size by ten or more. The image will not look better for it — you are buying compatibility and edit-safety, not quality.

A lossless destination, not a lossless source

Most AVIF files are lossy. PNG guarantees no further loss from this point on, but it cannot recover detail the AVIF compression already discarded.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

AVIF is extremely efficient and PNG is lossless. A ten-fold increase is normal and does not mean anything went wrong.

Does my browser support AVIF?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or newer do. If yours does not, the option will not be offered.

Should I use JPG instead?

If the image has no transparency and you just want a small, universally readable file, yes. Choose PNG for transparency or for lossless editing.
