How to do it

  1. Drop your GIF below.
  2. Output is WebP; adjust quality if you like.
  3. Press Convert and download.

Stills only

This tool produces a still image. An animated GIF gives you its first frame, because nothing it writes stores animation. If you need a lighter animation, this is not the right tool.

Why the file shrinks

GIF is limited to 256 colours and compresses poorly. WebP handles the same flat artwork, or a photo saved as a GIF, in far less space, and keeps GIF's transparency.

Alternatives

For maximum compatibility choose GIF to PNG, or GIF to JPG for photos.

Questions

Is this free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no cap on how many files you convert.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server — you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Does it keep the animation?

No. You get the first frame as a still WebP.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. WebP supports transparency.

Is WebP smaller than GIF?

For a still image, almost always.
